693 3AW
693 3AW Tuesday Morning 20/2/07 I was listening to the 3aw station to see what kind of stuff they talk about and how its different with other stations. My opinion on the station is that its very different with other stations for example;Mix 101.1 they just keep talking and talking about random stuff like what happened to them on the weekend stuff like and playing a lot of music. 3aw (693) Is different by giving us updates of the news, whats going on and play one or two songs.3Aw also air adverts onto the radio station, 3aw and Gold (104.3) are like similar but in different kinds of areas like Gold would just play a lot of songs and less talk on news where as 3aw gives a lot of information about news and play less songs.
The listeners would like 3Aw better becuz it suits the audience mostly 40-55, and in this day an age those kind of people want to know wats happening in the world or better still are country Australia.
3Aw has its plan togther in what people want to hear for example; they have News first, traffic details on whats happening on our roads, sport, and 2 to 3 songs and advertisements. I found this station very interesting when i was hearing it, because i use to listen to the station when i was a kid in the car with mum and she always use to put that particular station on, and i thought if i put this station on now would it be different or the same as a kid, but you know what its still the same just different plans going on and not being called Magic 693 anymore known as 3Aw.
GOLD 104
27/2/07 Today i listened to Gold 104 and to find out if it was similar or kind of the same radio station as 3AW. Gold 104 and 3aw are the same but in different catagories for example; gold plays a lot of classical songs whereas 3aw do news and dont play as much classical and enough songs on the radio, where in fact 3aw gives a lot of information of news, traffic and sport. Listening to gold 104 was not that good to me didnt really get my attention, although other people who listen to it find it interesting and exciting to listen too.For me i wouldn’t listen to that station unless i just wanted to hear classical songs, for news i would go to 3aw and to hear for competitions and stuff i would go to FM,Cage or nova.
774 ABC John Faine, Caroline Tran, Laura Love and Rory Mc Leod (20/3/07)
I listened to a podcast of an interview which turned into a conversation, it was pretty interesting and i really liked listening to it.
The type of interviews that John, Caroline, Laura and Rory had were like conversation types. John would ask one question and Caroline, Laura would talk for ages so like a conversation. Caroline would ask one to and it would, repeat like a conversation again. The interview with Rory Mc Leod was different because John has to ask some questions, because Rory would give short answers, John’s co-host Caroline would try to make the interview into a conversation so it would go longer and try to make it more interesting.
The weaknesses were that John and Caroline would ask the same question, but put it in a different way to say it. It goes to show that thier questions dont have enough information and makes the guest answer in short.
Caroline, John, and Laura got on in t interview or conversation and they had a lot too talk about like they have something in common. And they got along no fights and laughed at each others jokes. When Rory was interviewed he got along with John and Laura but he didn’t think much of caroline he would just give her a one sentence answer to her question, and also try and not let her get into the conversation. So it would only be rory, John and Laur. You can’t really tell if Caroline is in the conversation or not.
John has a good question technique, because his questions relate too long answers and by that it turns into a conversation. If the person gives a short answer Caroline tries to keep the conversation alive.
Good points where that John and Caroline asked Laura the question of how she got into music and the whole conversation was about Laura’s life stroy. Bad points where that John Faine brought up John lennon from the beatles of how he was famous but his music didn’t help him when he got short, which was suppose to be a joke but Rory Mc Leod found it offence because he thinks of John Lennon to be a hero. Then John Faine tryed to rap everything up, because Rory sounded that he was in a bad mood.
774 ABC with John Faine
John faine interviews Phillip radick about the update or feedback about David Hicks, they had a discussion about how Dick Chaney is involved and whether or not there where negotiations made about David Hicks serving his time in Australia instead of America. John Faine and Phillip Radick have a go at each other because John faine doesn’t believe that are country is doing nothing about David Hicks. Phillip Radick hasn’t done his research at all his just making up crap and feeding it to John Faine, and John doesn’t believe it one bit. Listening to this radio station seemed very interesting because 2 people who are very smart having a go at each other, well John Faine kind of started it first because he was having a go at Phillip it feels that he hates him. John Faine is on David Hicks side he believes that he is incident and John is asking the same question to Phiilp but it seems that Phillip is trying to get pass it and not answer it at all. John was asking him “whose idea was it for David Hicks not to stay in australia and serve time in America because we dont want hicks here because his a terroist.
Red Simons Southern Cross
Today i listened to the radio station of Red Simons on the moring show, and he was talking about the accident that happened between the Vline train and the Trailer Truck driving into it. I found it different for Red to talk this way because everytime i hear him talk he is talking as in he doesnt care about the subject and drifts somewhere else. With this kind of news he approached differently at it because it was a big thing and also it a very serious matter.
Red simons also made some mistakes on his show when he wanted to pass it over to a news update about the weather he said it was “16 mins to 7″, when he was going to the add break he said “16 mins to 8″. Although threw out the whole show it was interesting and also very entertaining.

- Hamish and Andy Show
- Hamish and Andy
Audience/Ratings:
- 1,111,000 (cume)
- Rating for station: 2
- Rating for show: 1
Content:
· The show starts with a brief intro then they jump straight into a phone in asking callers to tell them what they have given up after one day. This topic comes up after a conversation between the presenters in relation to Brittney Spears leaving rehab after one day.
· Next is a segment called “Hey get us an autograph”. Fox L.A. correspondent Brad tries to sneak into any Oscar after party he can find. This eventually leads to an interview with actor Jamie Foxx it’s a fairly soft interview with Brad asking comical questions like “Does having an Oscar make you more attractive to women?”
· Hamish and Andy get talking about vice president Dick Cheney wanting to bring his own guns into the country this in turn sparks another phone in which asks “have you ever had a fussy guest?”
· Brief skit parodying AM radio stations.
· Competition: Win Andy as a stripper at your hens night. Hamish then comes up with the idea of getting Jamie Durie to teach Andy some stripping moves for the next show.
Presenters:
· Hamish talks with a lisp I believe this adds to his character he is the more outgoing of the duo.
· Andy is the more sensible one he is usually the one to get conned into the stupid stunts they do i.e. stripping. Andy has a stronger voice that helps balance and differeciate from Hamish.
· As a pair they project a relaxed mood and strong chemistry between one another and also develop chemistry with their audience by joking passively to their situations.
Music:
· They might get a choice in what order they play it but the songs that they play are basically right out of the Aria’s top 40 chart
· When they’re speaking the don’t have background music only music to introduce and conclude the show
Scripting:
· If they do use scripts the use of it is very minimal. Hamish and Andy will generally adlib segments in the show and then when for example they do a phone in they will basically improve the whole thing.
Complexity:
· Short entertaining segments broken up by ad breaks about venue functions, concerts or clinics a Hamish and Andy sweeper will usually follow to introduce the show back.
Unity:
· Segue way into segments by reviewing last weeks show e.g. “you may remember last we….”
· Back announcements after songs
· Mention what’s coming up to keep audience listening
Strengths/Weaknesses
· The show involves its audience heavily with its phone ins, however it probably has to many phones in for one show
· The show flows well
· When they talk to each other they tend to alienate the audience
· Entertaining Concepts which appeal to their target audience
· Simple concepts that don’t need much thought this is perfect for it 4.00pm drive time slot as people are coming home from school and work and don’t want to have to think.

- Hughesy and Kate
Audience/Ratings:
- 829,000 (cume)
- Rating for station: 5
- Rating for show: 4
Content:
· Intro welcoming back Kate after her absence. Kate doing a line out of a movie and having the rest of the crew guess
· Phone in to welcome back Kate, one phone call goes off and a tangent and the subject turns garbage and in turn leads to another phone in “Things you pick up at the tip”
· Phone in to funny names at the Fina championships provoked by the swimmer Mancock (some sexual innuendo is followed after this name was brought up)
· Segment “Hughsey loses it!!” in this segment Hughsey is set one minute to go on a rant with a topic of his choice this time it was Pauline Hanson discussing her sex life on A Current Affair.
Presenters:
· Hughsey has a distinctive bogan voice which can be irritable depending on your tastes he is not afraid to speak his mind, he will generally lead the show.
· Kate projects the image of a mum that thinks she is cool. She can be very annoying at times but if you give her a chance she may spin some gold from out of her mouth, she sort of tries to keep Hughsey in line.
· As a pair they don’t generate the strongest chemistry but the get by, by working off each other they generally work better when there is a third party involved i.e a caller. Together they generate a quirky relationship with their audience in the way that they present themselves.
Music:
· The music that they play is a mixture of the playlist that they have posted on their website it is basically new indie and pop music.
· When they’re speaking they don’t have background music but they do incorporate sound effects like a ding ding for a positive answer or ba ba for a negative answer.
Scripting:
· Sounds like either there is very little scripting or there is really bad scripting probably due to Hughseys stand up background he has perfected improve better than Kate who squeezes in little comments when she can
Complexity:
· The short segments that the show offers are for the really simple minded, however this is not necessarily a bad thing due to their morning time slot when the audience isn’t fully switched on yet.
Unity:
· Background jingles help like planed segments together
· Using Hughseys new CD as a cross promotion.
Strengths/Weaknesses
· Hughsey carries the comedic end of the show well
· Topics to talk about are lacking (lack of planning?)
· Bad adlibbing e.g Kate making an annoying shrieking voice from a movie line for a good few minutes
· Different segments of the show linked well
· Tend to build their show around phone ins which can be rather tedious.

· Why channel 7 can maintain their rating and why.
· Explanation of 9 and 10 early program changes

· SBS introducing commercials and there strongest programs: Top Gear. Myth Busters and Inspector Rex
· Interview with Kim Dalton director of tv for ABC. Soft Interview about ABC content it then moves into a more probing interview about outsourcing ideas for programming.
· Wrap up of what’s on next program.
Presenters:
· Antony has an intimate microphone technique he doesn’t really reach out to his audience with personality, he does it more with content he presents
Music:
· Mellow old music that would only appeal to a small demogrpahic
Scripting:
· Majority of show is scripted except for the follow up questions but it’s delivered in a subtle way were you don’t notice the reading
Complexity:
· The show is divided into three segments broken up by 15 second sound bites which give the audience a quick break between the lengthy talking
Unity:
· Antony introduces what is to come in the show which helps as a segue
· Sound bites help what topic they are talking about now
· A brief mention at the end of the show as to what is going to be on next weeks show helps as a segue between the two shows.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
· As a whole the show flows well.
· The talking could be broken up into smaller segments to give the audience a break
· Appeal very well to its demographic
· No audience involvement

- Spoonman
Audience/Ratings:
- 591,000 (cume)
- Rating for show: 7
- Rating for station: 6
Content:
· David Hicks trial; the outcome and how much time he will do over it. Spoonman puts forth his view on why Hicks should do the time.
· Phone in: “How much time should he serve?”
· Where would he be if he wasn’t detained?
· Has he already served his time at Guantanamo Bay?
Presenters:
· Spoonman has a deep opinionated voice and he’s not afraid to cut off a caller if he doesn’t like the caller’s opinion. He can get easily irritated by listeners that call in expressing theirs views when it’s a view that he doesn’t agree with. On the other hand he can be rather pleasant when it’s something he agrees with. He is man that makes sure he has all the facts before he puts forth his own opinions which can be seen in the way he backs up his opinions. His technique towards his callers can go very rapidly from soft to challenging
Music:
· Classic Rock
Scripting:
· It is clear that the Spoonman reads from a script but as extra things come along he will adlib into it. With his callers he can be known to go off on a improv tangent.
Complexity/Unity
· One topic throughout show but looked at from different aspects
Strengths/Weaknesses:
· Entertaining listening to Spoonman take on his callers in debate
· One topic throughout show is tedious
· Very informative
· Good audience involvment
Sunday Safran
ID:
- Triple J

- Sunday
- Sunday Safran
- John Safran and Father Bob Maguire
Audience/Ratings:
- 237,000 (cume)
- Rating for station: 9
- Rating for show: 11
Content:
· Intro with what will be on this weeks show with a brief opinion of each by the presenters.
· Interview with Gregory H Stanton from Genocide Watch. It is a probing interview as to what circumstances constitute genocide in relation to an African Bore farmers incident
· Interview with Geoffrey Stanton author of Communism: A Love Story. It’s a soft/probing interview about the history of communism in Melbourne. It is also a good opportunity to promote the book
· Interview with Anthony Lowenstein author of My Israel Question. This is a particularly challenging interview which draws on Anthony’s answers to interview question in the past to catch him out.
Presenters:
· John Safran leads the show with a distinctive lisp very well despite the terrible chemistry between him and Father Bob. There are rare moments when the pair are on the same wavelength and produce good listening. Father Bob creates an awkward mood while John tries to lift the atmosphere Bob creates to keep the show on track. Father Bob has a habit of going on a ramble which can sometimes be very insightful but apart from these random rambles he tends to keep quiet throughout the show
Music:
· Generally upcoming Australian based artists that would most likely be unheard off sometimes overseas artists but it’s music that you would be unlikely to hear on other stations
Scripting:
· The scripts have a base at the start of the show, but as the show progresses Bob tends to go off on improve whilst Safran jumps between adlib and improv.
Complexity:
· The show uses long segments broken up by short music breaks
· The theme song to the show is rather catchy and would grab a first time listeners attention instantly
Unity:
· The show uses its intro as a segue to prepare the audience for what is to come in the show
· Also the back announcement of songs helps the flow and unity of the show
· The show sticks to its common theme of religion sometimes loosely but still to a satisfactory standard.
Strengths/Weaknesses
· The show flows well
· Father Bob sometimes doesn’t know what they are talking about
· Good interview techniques
· No audience involvement
